Hugo
Character Sketch Ficlet

Hugo Weasley, much to his fathers chagrin, was given his first computer when he was eight. Oddly enough it wasn’t given to him by his mother, or by any of his other muggle relatives, but by Arthur Weasley. Grandpa Arthur had been trying to turn the machine on for weeks before little Hugo came to visit, and with a most natural press of a button had started up the old desktop. (Shortly after the war Hermione had Arthur’s workshop added to the power grid. Arthur had gotten as far as plugging the thing in, but had found activation spells nearly useless.)

At first they worked in secret, but eventually what they were doing came out into the open. Arthur bought Hugo every book he could find on the subject of computers and the two developed a very close relationship. They figured out how muggle machines worked together, it’s a passion they both shared, although Arthur didn’t quite have the talent Hugo did. Ever since Hugo has added seven computers to their collection, four of which he built himself.

Most of the things he does on the internet are legal.

Hugo and his parents have an arrangement that upon receiving an acceptable number of NEWTS he will be allowed to apply to any muggle university he chooses. Hermione supports Hugo’s interest in computers, and is quite impressed at his skill, but was shocked when Hugo first told her that he’d rather not go to Hogwarts if it meant not being able to access the internet ten months of the year.

“I understand, really I do Hugo, this is what you love. Unfortunately you just can’t ignore your magical education! It’s ignorant, not to mention dangerous!” She had told him. Still, Hugo was somewhat uninterested in magic, although he did have a natural skill for charms and a penchant for ancient runes and arithmancy (Which are not unlike coding most of the time). It is the bane of his existence that electronics do not work on school grounds, and he has been working to remedy this since his first year. After all, muggle-borns have been using muggle cameras on Hogwarts grounds for decades, instead of using the electronic flash they use an altered lumos spell. Hugo spends most of his free time in a sectioned off corner of the school library trying to do something similar to his computer.

By the time he was thirteen years old and entering into his third year he was no closer to having his laptop ‘Hogwarts-compliant’ as he referred to it, although he had managed to charm his battery pack into running off of magical energy.

Hugo Weasley has red hair like his father, it is long and scruffy grown out to his ears. He enjoys the unkempt and natural look of his hair, and would deny the fact that he actually styles it as such. He has dark brown eyes, and dark brown freckles on his nose and cheeks. He used to be short and pudgy, which initially caused him to be teased at school a lot, but over the summer he has grown much taller, lanky and awkward. He, like most thirteen-year-old boys, has not quite gotten the hang of his body and slouches always, even when standing. He is never seen without his blue canvas side satchel, which contains his laptop any number of books, most of which are rescued university texts that his Gramps owls him while he is in school, and his favorite blue knit hat with bronze trim that his Gran Molly made for him in first year.

Although he has isolated himself as the only student in Hogwarts that doesn’t think magic is all that impressive he tells himself that he is not lonely while he is at school. He is quite busy, actually.
